Mentors.  H3 – Heart, Hand and Head Mentoring Program.   Our mentoring program matches a caring adult with a child at the Center.  Mentors provide the gifts of heart, hand and head by developing a caring relationship with the child, enjoying fun activities with them and helping with school work when needed.   There are two variations of the mentoring program:

  • On-Site Mentors meet one-on-one with a student at the Center on a non-academic day.  Time commitment:  once a week for an hour between 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. with the intent to continue for at least a year.
  • Community-Based Mentors meet one-on-one with a student off-site.  Big Brothers Big Sisters partners with the Center to provide interviews and screening of both volunteers and students. Thom Blair and Myceiun PattersonTime commitment: once a week for at least a year.

Garden Mentor. 9:00-12:00 Thursdays. Assist our garden educator during garden time each Thursday. Or water on non-gardening days.

Clare’s Camp July 11-15 & August 8-12
The Clare’s Camp program takes place at Roslyn Retreat Center on River Road in Henrico.  With a traditional VBS format, groups rotate from activity to activity, ranging from recreation to arts and crafts. Volunteers are needed as Camp Counselors, Junior Counselors, and Leaders and Assistants for Arts & Crafts, Recreation, Music, Bible Study and Food Preparations.  Commitment:  One week.  Full job descriptions are available upon request, and a separate application is required for this camp.  Volunteer Orientation for July 11-15 Clare’s Camp:  July 6, 3:00 p.m.;  for August 8-12 Clare’s Camp: July 29, 3:00 p.m. or August 3, 3:00 p.m.

Food Distribution Workers
Distribution takes place the first and third Wednesday of each month. We need approximately 5 to 10 volunteers to help with registration, unloading food, sorting food and assisting clients with food selections.  We begin registration at 8:00 a.m. and finish up by noon. This is a great volunteer opportunity for church or youth groups.  Dates for summer distributions:  July 6 and 20, and August 3 and 17.

Snack Bags
If you can’t join us during our summer program, but would like to help out, this is a great group project. Each afternoon, we will send our students home with a snack bag, included are such items as a box drink, whole wheat crackers, baked chips, mini-muffins, applesauce or fruit cup (no sugar added); nuts or seeds (pistachios, peanuts, sunflower seeds); fruit roll up, cookie or brownie.
