PPDC’s 2017 Summer Promise begins full swing July 5 and runs through August 25.  This year, 140 children in grades two through eight will enjoy a variety of camps both on-site and around the metropolitan area Monday through Friday from 9:00 until 3:00 at our PPDC Central Campus and 50 children will attend our Fairfield Court Summer Promise program.  Summer orientation dates:  Wednesday, June 7, 6:00-7:00 or Thursday, June 15, 10:00-11:00.

Here’s a listing of some of the volunteer needs we have this summer:

PPDC Central Campus & Fairfield Court Summer Promise Campus

  • Camp Classroom Assistant.  9:00-12:00 Monday through Friday.  Assist teacher with different reading groups and math skills.  Commitment: one full week, if possible.
  • Camp Program Assistant.  1:00-3:00 Monday through Friday.  Assist with afternoon enrichment and recreational activities.  Commitment: once a week.
  • Reading Buddy.  12:00-1:00 Monday through Friday.  Enjoy lunch and reading time with a small group or one of our students.  Commitment: one day a week.
  • Mentors.  H3 – Heart, Hand and Head Mentoring Program.   Our mentoring program matches a caring adult with a child at the Center.  Mentors provide the gifts of heart, hand and head by developing a caring relationship with the child, enjoying fun activities with them and helping with school work when needed.  Mentors meet one-on-one with a student at the Center on a non-academic day.  Time commitment:  once a week for an hour between 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. with the intent to continue for at least a year.
  • Tutors.  9:00-12:00 Monday through Friday.  With the assistance of our educational specialists, tutors work one-on-one with a student in order to strengthen his or her academic skills. Commitment: one hour, once a week.
  • Garden Mentor.  9:00-12:00 Thursdays.  Assist our garden educator during garden time each Thursday.  Or water on non-gardening days.

Clare’s Camp: July 10-14 (Middle School); July 24-28 (Fairfield Court Elementary); August 7-11 (Central)

The Clare’s Camp program takes place at Roslyn Retreat Center on River Road in Henrico.  With a traditional VBS format, groups rotate from activity to activity, ranging from recreation to arts and crafts. Volunteers are needed as Camp Counselors, Junior Counselors, and Leaders and Assistants for Arts & Crafts, Recreation, Music, Bible Study and Food Preparations.  Commitment:  One week.  Full job descriptions are available upon request, and a separate application is required for this camp.

Food Distribution Workers

Distribution takes place the first and third Wednesday of each month. We need approximately 5 to 10 volunteers to help with registration, unloading food, sorting food and assisting clients with food selections.  We begin registration at 8:00 a.m. and finish up by noon. This is a great volunteer opportunity for church or youth groups.  Dates for summer distributions:  June 21, July 19, and August 2 and 16

Snack Bags

If you can’t join us during our summer program, but would like to help, this is a great group project. Each afternoon, we will send our students home with a snack bag, included are such items as a box drink, whole wheat crackers, baked chips, mini-muffins, applesauce or fruit cup (no sugar added); nuts or seeds (pistachios, peanuts, sunflower seeds); fruit roll up, cookie or brownie.
